Nutiva offers two types of shelled Hempseeds. Our Certified Organic seeds are grown without any chemical pesticides, herbicides or chemical fertilizers. Our non-organic seeds are grown without any pesticides or herbicides and are not Certified Organic.
Because Nutiva cannot legally grow hemp in the United States, we must reply on Canadian farmers to produce our hemp crops. Shortages of organic seeds often occur due to weather or because surging sales outstrip supply.
- cold-processed
- oxygen removed
These steps ensure freshness and help protect the delicate Omega-3 fatty acids. It's part of Nutiva's commitment to "Nourishing People and Planet."
Shelled hemp seeds (or hempnuts) taste similar to sesame or sunflower seeds and can be added to almost any recipe. Ingredients: 100% raw shelled hemp seeds.
Storage: It is best to keep our seeds refrigerated and air tight. If you purchase a bulk 5-pound bag, consider adding a pound to a container for daily use, and seal up the 5-pound bag and place it in the freezer. This will help protect the seed quality.
About Shelled Hempseeds
These golden nuts are rapidly gaining popularity, thanks to their versatility and the absence of shells. They look like sesame seeds and taste like sunflower seeds. Shelled seeds (hulled seeds) still contain small bits of hull and a few immature seeds. This unwanted content will be further reduced as larger seeds and improved technologies are developed.
Uses: Shelled hempseeds can be used as snacks (bars and nutballs), for baking (bread, cakes and cookies), sprinkled on salads or granola, and added to soups, stews, sauces, and dips.
Storage: Shelled hempseeds can easily turn rancid if they are not properly stored. Keep them dry, cool, and away from light. Once opened, they are best kept in the refrigerator. An opened container of Shelled hempseeds in the refrigerator keeps several months.
Roasting: Shelled hempseeds are especially delicious when lightly and carefully roasted in a pan on top of the stove. Careful with the heat: too much will make the seeds dark and bitter.
Recipes:
Nut Butter
Uses: Nut butter can be used as a butter substitute on breads, to make dips and spreads, or to add body to soups and sauces. The ground, shelled seeds (no oil added) are also quite versatile for cooking.
Preparation: Use either raw or lightly toasted shelled seed. Grind them in a coffee grinder or blender. The resulting fat-rich flour needs added oil to make it spreadable, whereas a Champion juicer produces a nut butter that needs no oil. Commercially made hemp butter is also available for purchase.
Storage: Store your nut butter in a closed jar in the refrigerator. Unless routinely left open on the breakfast table, it will keep for a few months. . . if it lasts that long!
Hemp Milk and Cheese Products
Uses: Nondairy milk and cheese products are made from either whole or shelled hempseeds and can replace any dairy-, soy-protein-, or rice-protein-based materials.
Storage: Keep them in the refrigerator.
